Getting the conversation started

We’ll talk about what you’re looking for, answer any questions, and discuss the support you and your child might need. We’ll work around your family’s routine, so everything is shaped to fit what works best for you.

Finding the perfect match

Your child will fill out a short questionnaire so we can get to know them better, and learn more about their interests, needs, or specific requests. We use this to handpick three mentors who we think would be a great fit, and you and your child will be able to choose the one who feels right for you.

Your mentoring sessions start

Mentoring sessions take place online, last 45–60 minutes, and usually happen once a week, but we’re flexible to your schedule. Each session is shaped around your teen’s goals, with practical strategies and a concrete takeaway every time.

Keeping you in the loop

After each session, your mentor writes a short, friendly update on TutorCruncher so you’re always in the loop. We also check in after the first few sessions and at regular intervals. You’re welcome to reach out with questions or feedback at any time, and if anything needs adjusting, we’ll make it happen.

Ongoing care and support

Along the journey, we’ll keep shaping the support around what you and your child need. We’re here to listen and adapt, making sure the experience is always safe, supportive, and right for your family.

What are sessions like?

Check In

This is a space for catching-up so your child can share how they’re feeling and what’s been on their mind.

Setting the Focus

Together, choose one priority to work on that day (for example confidence, motivation, friendships, school stress, or a specific challenge).

Work Together

This is the main part of the session, a space to talk things through and try practical tools, strategies, and activities your child can use in their day to day life.

Wrap-Up

Towards the end of the session, your child and their mentor will pause to reflect on what went well, what your child can take away, and what feels most important to carry forward into everyday life.

Next Steps

Your child and their mentor will agree on one small, realistic next step to try between sessions that is supportive and achievable.

Quick Update

After each session, there's a brief report to help track progress, share any important updates, and ensure everyone stays supported and safe.

Meet some of our mentors

The right mentor can make all the difference. Our mentors are chosen not just for their experience, but for their kindness, understanding, and because mentees can easily relate to them. We believe that when your child connects with someone who “gets it,” real growth and confidence can follow.

FAQs

1. About Freemind & Mentoring

What makes Freemind Mentors different from other services?

Freemind Mentors is the bridge between where your child is and where they want to be. What sets us apart is our focus on connection: we pair teens with mentors who are just a few years ahead—people who "get it," listen without judgment, and are equipped to help build confidence and real-life skills. Our approach is grounded in research, guided by real experience, and recommended by 100% of families who've joined us.

Who can join Freemind?

Our mentoring is for young people aged 11–18. If you're not sure if your child fits, or you have questions about your situation, just reach out—we're always happy to talk it through and help you find the right support.

Is there a better age to start mentoring?

Not really—mentoring can have an impact at any age. The sooner a young person starts, the more likely they are to be open about communicating, sharing their concerns, and identifying a positive direction and purpose in their lives.

Is there evidence to prove that mentoring works?

Research proves that mentoring is greatly useful in young adults' lives. Studies have shown it helps individuals improve both social and academic prospects. Mentoring allows meaningful relationships to be formed, having a real impression on the mentee. It allows them to develop leadership, management, communication, and creative skills. Mentoring for young adults also further empowers them to give back to their community.

  • Students with a mentor are 52% less likely to skip a day of school.
  • 37% of students with a mentor are less likely to skip a class.
  • 55% of young adults who have a mentor but face an opportunity gap are more likely to get a higher education than peers who did not possess a mentor.
  • 78% of young adults with a mentor are more likely to volunteer regularly.
  • 90% of young adults with a mentor are interested in becoming one in the future.
  • 59% of teens with a mentor get better grades than their peers.
  • 27% of young adults with a mentor are less likely to use alcohol.

Is mentoring the same as tutoring or therapy?

Nope! Mentoring is quite different. Your mentor isn't there to teach schoolwork or dig into your child's past. Instead, they're someone a bit older who's been through similar things and can help your child talk things through, figure stuff out, and look ahead. It's about support, not lessons or therapy—and your child will walk away with new skills and ways to face whatever comes next.

What if we're not sure if mentoring is right for us?

That's completely fine—there's no pressure. We're here to answer your questions and help you decide what's best for your family. If you're curious about how mentoring could help, reach out for a chat—sometimes a conversation is the best way to see if it feels right.

2. Getting Started & Logistics

How do we sign up or get started? What happens after I fill out the contact form?

Simply fill out our contact form and we'll get in touch within a day or two. We'll arrange a relaxed chat to learn more about your needs, answer any questions, and talk through next steps together.

Is there a waiting list?

There usually isn't a waiting list. If there ever is, we'll let you know right away. Just get in touch and we'll have a friendly call to understand your needs and see how we can help.

Is there a minimum commitment or can we try it out first?

We recommend starting with our 6-session package. This gives your child enough time to build trust with their mentor, get a real feel for the process, and start to see some small results. After that, we'll chat about what's best for your family—whether that's continuing with a set package, going session-by-session, or taking a break.

How do payments work?

You can choose between set packages (paid upfront) or a rolling plan. When you reach out, we'll talk you through the options so you can make the choice that fits your family best.

What happens at the end of a package of sessions?

When your sessions are finished, you can reach out to us, or we'll check in to see what feels right for you—whether that's continuing, taking a break, or wrapping up.

Can we pause or take a break from sessions?

Absolutely. Just let us know if you need to pause at any time, and we'll work with you to find the best way forward.

How do we continue if we want more sessions?

Just send us a quick message or give us a call, and we'll help you set up additional sessions or a new package.

Can sessions be in person or are they always online?

All sessions are currently held online. This allows for flexibility, convenience, and close safeguarding. If you have a special request or concern, please let us know—we're always open to a conversation.

Where do the mentoring sessions take place?

Due to our safeguarding policies, all mentoring takes place online. If you should hear from your child of any proposed face-to-face meetings, please advise us immediately.

What technology or equipment do we need?

All you need is a laptop, tablet, or smartphone with internet access. We'll help you get set up if you have any questions.

How do we access sessions? (platform, links, etc.)

Sessions are held online using secure video links. You'll receive all the information you need to get started.

How long are the sessions and how often do they happen?

Sessions last around 45–60 minutes and are usually once a week, but we're flexible to your schedule.

What if our schedule changes or we need to reschedule?

We're flexible and follow your lead—just let us or your mentor know as soon as possible, ideally with at least 24 hours' notice. If you need to cancel with less than 24 hours' notice, the session will still be charged, but we'll always do our best to accommodate your needs.

What happens if we miss or need to cancel a session?

If you need to cancel, please give us as much notice as possible—ideally at least 24 hours before the session. If you need to cancel with less than 24 hours' notice, the session will still be charged, but we'll always do our best to help you reschedule or discuss next steps.

Can my child have more than one mentor?

At Freemind, each mentee works with one mentor at a time. If you think your child has a special need for more than one mentor, please reach out—we're happy to listen and see how we can best support your situation.

3. Mentors & Matching

How does the matching process work?

When you join us, we get to know your child through a short questionnaire (mentors fill one out too!). Using what we learn about their interests, needs, and personality, we handpick three mentors we believe would be a great fit. You and your child then get to choose the mentor who feels right for you.

Who are your mentors?

Our mentors are caring, relatable role models who are just a few years ahead of your child. Each is chosen for their empathy, understanding, and ability to connect with teens.

Can we choose our mentor?

Yes! We'll introduce you to three carefully selected mentors, and you and your child can choose the one that feels like the best fit.

Can we change mentors if needed?

Absolutely. Your child's comfort is our priority, and you can request a change at any time. We'll listen, talk it through, and help you find a better match—no awkwardness, no problem.

How do you make sure the mentor is a good fit?

We take time to get to know both your child and our mentors. We look at interests, personalities, and needs to make the best possible match. We also check in after the first few sessions to make sure everyone's happy, and we adapt based on the feedback you give us.

What qualifications or experience do mentors have?

Our mentors are selected for their character, empathy, and ability to relate to teens. Each mentor completes comprehensive safeguarding and youth support training, receives ongoing supervision, and has access to a full toolkit of resources designed by experts. Many are actively studying or working in fields related to education, psychology, or youth work, and all are committed to making a positive difference.

How are mentors vetted and trained?

All mentors are fully vetted, trained in safeguarding, and sessions are closely monitored by our team. Mentors go through a thorough selection process, background checks, and complete comprehensive training before working with any mentee, especially on the topic of safeguarding. Any concern is promptly flagged by our system and addressed immediately.

4. Sessions & Programme Experience

What topics can my child talk about?

Anything that matters to them—school, friendships, confidence, planning for the future, or just what's on their mind. This is a safe space for whatever they want to explore. (Note: Mentoring isn't therapy. If anything concerning comes up, we'll address it mindfully and appropriately, always keeping you informed.)

What if my child wants to switch topics or focus areas?

That's completely fine. Each session is shaped around what your child needs most at that time. If things change, just let us or the mentor know.

How do you make sure sessions are useful and not just "chats"?

Sessions are structured to focus on real goals and practical strategies, not just conversation. Each session usually focuses on one 'core task', where your child will work on specific skills, techniques, or approaches that they can apply in their own time between sessions. Each session ends with a concrete takeaway or next step for your child.

Will my child have activities or things to try between sessions?

Often, yes—mentors may suggest small actions or ideas to try out between sessions, but there's never any pressure or "homework." It's about supporting growth at your child's pace.

Will I know what my child discusses with the Mentor?

As with counselling and therapy, the intention of the mentoring session is to provide a "safe" and confidential space for the Mentee to air whatever they choose to raise. Therefore, unless there is something that the Mentor is concerned about, the content of sessions will be kept between the Mentee and the Mentor. However, the mentor will share with you a brief update on TutorCruncher after each session—what was covered, any wins or challenges, and next steps.

Am I expected to be involved in sessions?

As with counselling and therapy, the intention of the mentoring session is to provide a "safe" and confidential space for the Mentee to air whatever they choose to raise. Therefore, unless there is something that the Mentor is concerned about, the content of sessions will be kept between the Mentee and the Mentor. Rest assured that all mentors are fully vetted, trained in safeguarding, and sessions are closely monitored by our team. Any concern is promptly flagged by our system and addressed immediately.

5. Safeguarding, Privacy & Safety

How do you keep my child safe?

Your child's safety is our top priority. All mentors are fully vetted, trained in safeguarding, and sessions are closely monitored by our team. Any concern is promptly flagged by our system and addressed immediately.

Are sessions monitored for safety?

Yes. For safeguarding purposes, all sessions are recorded and transcripts are analysed in real time by our safeguarding team for any concerning language or behaviour. This information is securely protected and only accessible to our safeguarding team.

What if there's a safeguarding concern?

If you have any concerns about safety or wellbeing, please contact us straight away. We take every concern seriously and act quickly to address any issues.

What if my child feels uncomfortable or has a problem?

We're always here to listen. If anything doesn't feel right, let us know right away and we'll work with you to address it immediately.

How is my child's privacy protected?

Your child's privacy is respected at all times. Session information is kept secure, and we only share information with you or others when it's necessary for safety or agreed to in advance by all parties.

Who can I contact if I have a concern?

At the start of your mentoring journey with us, you'll be introduced to a member of our team who will be your main point of contact for any and all concerns. You can also contact us through the website, by phone, email, or WhatsApp—whatever works best for you.

6. Feedback, Adaptation & Support

How do I give feedback or request changes?

We welcome feedback at any time—just reach out to us or your mentor. Throughout the mentoring journey, you'll also have regular chances to share feedback through a dedicated form. We'll always listen and do our best to adapt to your needs.

What if my child doesn't want to continue?

If your child wants to pause or stop, let's have a chat to understand what's going on and decide together on the best next steps. We'll always support your family's decision.

What if our needs change over time or things aren't working?

We're flexible. If anything isn't working or your needs change, just let us know. We'll listen, review together, and make adjustments so the experience fits your family.

Can we add more sessions or change the package?

Yes, you can add sessions or adjust your package at any time. Just let us know and we'll take it from there.

What support is available for parents?

We're here for you too—whether you have questions, need advice, or just want to talk something through. Reach out anytime and we'll do our best to help.
