These Are Some of the Things You Could Help With

Every mentoring journey is unique: your role is to support each young person as they explore, grow, and work through what matters most to them. As a mentor, you’ll help teens tackle real-life challenges, build confidence, and develop practical skills they’ll use long after your sessions end.

How it Works

Every mentoring journey is a bit different—together with your mentor, you’ll find support as you explore, grow, and work through whatever matters most to you.

Apply online

Hit the “Apply” button to start your application. You’ll fill out a short questionnaire (15–20 minutes tops) so we can learn about who you are, your strengths, availability, interests, and what motivates you. Once submitted, we’ll be in touch as soon as possible.

Apply Today

Friendly chat

The Freemind team will invite you for a friendly interview. We’ll get to know you, answer your questions, and make sure we’re the right fit for each other.

DBS Check

As part of our safeguarding commitment, all mentors must complete a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check before working with young people. We’ll guide you through this process during onboarding.

Onboarding & Training

You’ll complete a one-hour accredited safeguarding course to prepare you for working with young people. After that, join a group or 1:1 training session with the Freemind team to cover how the programme works, what to expect, and to clear up any questions. You’ll get a Mentor Toolkit (session ideas, conversation starters) and a workbook for your mentees.

Thoughtful Matching

As part of the onboarding process, both you and your mentees complete a short questionnaire, through which we carefully review your strengths, interests, and personalities to create the best possible matches.

Lead Sessions

It’s time to start mentoring! Sessions are flexible and you will be able to schedule them together with your mentee’s family, to suit everyone’s availability. To support you, you’ll also get a Mentor Toolkit to guide and inspire you, but as you build the relationship, you’ll know best how to adapt each session to what your mentee needs most.

Ongoing Support

You’ll have a dedicated group chat with the Freemind team and your mentee’s family for questions or support at any time. We check in after a few sessions, halfway through, and at the end of the programme, but you can reach out whenever you need.

What are sessions like?

Check In

Start with a quick catch-up on how your mentee is feeling and what’s on their mind.

Set the Focus

Together, choose what matters most right now, whether that is confidence, goals, or a specific challenge, and start working on it straight away.

Work Together

This is where you and your mentee get into the main work, talking it through, and trying out practical tools, strategies, and activities that your mentee can use in real life.

Wrap-Up

This is the moment to pause and reflect on what went well in today’s session, what your mentee seemed to take from it, and what you’d like them to carry into everyday life before you meet again.

Next Step

Before you wrap up, you and your mentee agree on a small next step, something realistic they can try between now and your next session.

Quick Update

At the end of each session, you’ll fill out a brief report to help track progress, share any important updates, and ensure everyone stays supported and safe.

Hear from other Mentors

See how mentoring has shaped the journeys of people just like you. These stories and testimonials come straight from our mentors sharing the impact they’ve made, the skills they’ve built, and what they’ve learned along the way.

FAQs

1. Getting Started & Eligibility

Who can become a mentor?

If you're a university student who's passionate about helping others, eager to learn, and looking for flexible, meaningful experience, you could be a great fit! We welcome mentors from all backgrounds—what matters most is your attitude and willingness to support young people.

Do I need prior experience to apply?

No, you don't need any previous mentoring or teaching experience. We look at individual circumstances, and the interview will help us get to know you a little better and see if you're a good fit for us (and us for you). We provide full training, resources, and ongoing support to help you succeed.

What subjects or backgrounds do you look for?

We welcome mentors from all degree subjects and backgrounds. Many of our mentors study Psychology, Education, or related fields, but what matters most is your desire to help and your ability to relate to young people.

Can international students apply?

Yes, international students can apply as long as you're currently based in the UK, have the right to work in the UK, and can prove this during the onboarding process.

Is mentoring the same as tutoring or therapy?

No—mentoring is different from tutoring or therapy. As a mentor, your role isn't to teach school subjects or provide clinical advice. Instead, you'll offer relatable support, share strategies for confidence and wellbeing, and help mentees navigate life's challenges as someone who's "been there." Our focus is on building skills, confidence, and perspective, not academic grades or therapy.

2. Application & Onboarding

How do I apply?

Just hit the “Apply” button and fill out our quick online questionnaire. It takes about 15–20 minutes and helps us get to know you, your strengths, and what you’re passionate about.

What does the application process involve?

After you submit your questionnaire, we’ll review your responses and invite you for a friendly interview with our Freemind team. If it’s a good fit, you’ll complete safeguarding training and join a training session to prepare for your mentoring journey.

How long does the application take?

The online questionnaire takes around 15–20 minutes to complete. After the questionnaire, there will be an interview, a training process, and then onboarding. It may take a few weeks for you to be matched to your first mentee—sometimes as little as one week, or a little longer depending on individual circumstances and how long your DBS check takes.

What happens after I submit my application?

We’ll get in touch as soon as possible to arrange your interview and guide you through the next steps.

Is there an interview?

Yes, we’ll invite you for a friendly, supportive interview with the Freemind team. It’s a chance for us to get to know each other and make sure it’s the right fit.

What is safeguarding training, and is it required?

Yes, safeguarding training is required for all mentors. It’s an accredited, one-hour online course that gives you the essential knowledge and confidence to work safely with young people.

What’s included in the mentor training session?

You’ll join a training session with the Freemind team (sometimes in a group, sometimes 1:1) to cover how the programme works, what to expect, and to clear up any questions. You’ll get a Mentor Toolkit (session ideas, conversation starters, mentor handbook, and a workbook for your mentees).

3. The Mentoring Role & Matching

How are mentees matched with mentors?

Both mentors and mentees fill out questionnaires about their interests, strengths, and personalities. We use this information to thoughtfully match you with mentees who will benefit from your unique perspective. Mentees can choose from a few mentor options, and the first session is a chance to check the fit.

Can I choose my mentee?

We do our best to match you with mentees based on shared interests and strengths. Mentees are given a choice of mentors, and the first session is always about making sure the right fit for everybody.

How many mentees will I have?

That depends on you—your availability, your schedule, and your preference. It can be one mentee or ten (or more). It’s completely up to you, your needs, and the number of mentees looking for a mentor at any given time.

What if I don’t feel like it’s a good match?

No worries—if things don’t feel right after your first session, just let us know and we’ll take it from there.

What kinds of things will I help with?

You’ll support mentees with everything from building confidence and communication skills to managing stress, exploring interests, and tackling everyday challenges. (See the “Word Wall” topics for examples!)

Is there a set curriculum or can I personalize sessions?

We provide a structure and toolkit for inspiration, but you’re encouraged to tailor sessions to your mentee’s needs and interests. Every mentoring journey is unique.

What resources will I have access to?

You’ll receive a Mentor Toolkit with session ideas, conversation starters, a mentor handbook, and a workbook for your mentees. Plus, ongoing support and new resources as they become available.

4. Scheduling, Commitment & Flexibility

How often are sessions?

The schedule is agreed beforehand between us and the mentee’s family, based on what they want—whether that’s weekly, biweekly, twice a month, etc. You’ll then schedule sessions with that cadence, based on your availability and schedule.

How long does each session last?

Sessions typically last 45–60 minutes.

Is the schedule flexible?

Yes! You and your mentee family agree on a schedule that works for everyone—around your studies, work, or other commitments.

Can I mentor around my studies, work, or other commitments?

Absolutely. Mentoring is designed to fit around your life and other priorities. If anything comes up last minute, it’s really important you let us know so we can support your mentee and make any necessary adjustments.

What if I need to take a break or change my availability?

Just let us know as soon as possible. We’ll work with you to adjust your schedule or arrange cover if needed.

How long do I need to commit for?

Most mentoring relationships last for a package of 6, 12, or 24 sessions, but we’re flexible. We ask that you see your mentee through the agreed package if possible.

5. Support, Community & Safety

What support will I receive as a mentor?

You’ll have ongoing support from the Freemind team, access to a group chat with other mentors, and plenty of opportunities for feedback and questions.

Who do I contact if I have a question or concern?

You can reach out to the Freemind team at any time via group chat, email, or phone. You’ll usually be assigned a member of our team to support you throughout your programme. You’ll have a chat with us and be able to text us at any time.

Will I get feedback on my mentoring?

If you’d like feedback on your mentoring, just ask us—we’re always happy to provide it!

Are there opportunities to share experiences with other mentors?

Yes! There is a mentor group chat where you can connect, share tips, and support each other.

How does Freemind ensure safety for mentors and mentees?

All mentors complete accredited safeguarding training. We have clear policies, regular check-ins, and open communication with families to ensure everyone feels safe and supported. All sessions are held online and are monitored for safeguarding and safety reasons. This ensures everyone’s safety and the highest quality of support for both mentors and mentees.

What should I do if I have a safeguarding concern?

Contact the Freemind team immediately. We’ll guide you through the right steps and provide any support you need.

What information is shared with parents/families?

We keep parents/families informed about logistics and progress, but respect the privacy of mentoring sessions unless there’s a safety concern.

6. Payment, Recognition & Practicalities

Is this a paid role?

Yes, mentoring is a paid opportunity. We’ll share all the details about payment during your application chat.

Can I use this experience for my CV or future job applications?

Do I need any special equipment?

Just a reliable internet connection, a computer or tablet with a camera and microphone, and a quiet space for sessions.

Can I mentor remotely?

Yes! All sessions are held online.

What platform do we use for sessions?

We use secure, easy-to-access video platforms (like Zoom) for all sessions.
